The Dog From Good Boy Makes Shocking Oscars Ask

According to Variety, the studio behind Good Boy made a shocking request to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the people in charge of the Oscars. The studio has asked the Academy if they would reconsider their rules based on the “Best Actor” category. Understandably, Studio IFC believes their lead actor, who happens to be a dog, should be in the running for the best actor category. While some critics are quick to dash this claim, there is plenty of reason for the request to be reasonably considered.

There have been animal actors since the dawn of time. Old Yeller, Air Bud, Lassie Come Home, and Seabiscuit are only a few of the many films featuring predominantly animal leads. Yet, neither the actors nor their trainers have ever had a chance to receive the proper credit. Not only are animals excluded from the best and supporting categories, but there is no award dedicated to animal actors whatsoever.

Therefore, is it really so surprising that the studio behind Good Boy feels as though their lead actor should be properly recognized? As far as animal performances go, Indy’s role in Good Boy is the pinnacle of the category. Good Boy is one of the best and most interesting horror movies released within the last few years. Its popularity comes in large part due to its lead actor’s incredible performance.

Interestingly, Indy actually belongs to director Ben Leonberg. The beloved canine companion’s full name is Indiana Bones, and he is normally quite relaxed when not actively dealing with a supernatural threat. If the academy is willing to consider “Indy’s” proposal, this could lead to a whole new wave of pet-centric films.

Given the prevalence of animal performers in the realm of film, it is honestly shocking that there hasn’t been a category created for them. Actors, regardless of species, deserve to have the afforded accolades for their incredible work. After all, if they can have a square on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, why shouldn’t they be able to win an Oscar?
