Even a blind man could see how much fans loved the character, so Marvel eventually brought Daredevil back for a new show on Disney+. Recently, Disney confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again would be returning for Season 3 after its yet-to-be-released second season, which affords many opportunities for the show’s writers.
If they want the next seasons to be a success, it’s important for the show to bring back Elektra, Daredevil’s former girlfriend turned bitter foe.
Elektra: Marvel’s Original Bad Girl
In the Netflix corner of the Marvel universe, Elektra was a really big deal: she sacrificed her life to save Matt Murdock at the end of a whirlwind Daredevil season, which revealed more about the title character’s bad-boy past and love life. Eventually, Elektra was resurrected, coming back to serve as the Big Bad of the Defenders TV show. She apparently died at the end of that ambitious crossover series, but in true comic book fashion, her body was never recovered.
That makes it relatively easy to bring Elektra back for Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, but why should Marvel focus on bringing back an old foe rather than introducing a new foe? For one thing, her presence would, much like the return of Kingpin and Bullseye, help cement this Disney+ show’s connection to the original Daredevil show. Such connections are important, particularly for fans worried that events like the shocking death of Foggy Nelson mean that the new show will never have the vibe of the old one.
Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!
Plus, Elektra has (to put it mildly) close ties to The Hand, so bringing her back would also be a great way to bring back everyone’s favorite ninja villains. Not only would they make great foes for Daredevil, but an invasion of ninjas would give Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk a legitimate reason to team up. That always makes for good comic storytelling (which is why Superman and Lex Luthor will be doing it in The Man of Tomorrow), and it would make perfect narrative sense now that Fisk is mayor and that saving the city will serve both his public and private ambitions.
Perhaps most importantly, Elektra is a chaos agent who can help the Born Again writers explore lesser-known aspects of Matt Murdock’s personality. As a former lover turned ally turned enemy and back again, she is useful for exploring Matt’s dark side and most impulsive tendencies. This is something Born Again tried to address in its very first episode, and Elektra would be a way to make Matt’s inner darkness an ongoing part of the show’s narrative.
Sai No More
The truth is that Elektra is a really cool character, and her actor, Elodie Yung, has killer chemistry with Daredevil actor Charlie Cox. Their scenes together in Daredevil Season 2 were electric whenever they were flirting, fighting, or anything in between. And while Born Again has been very solid so far, her presence may be exactly what this show needs to take things to the next level in an era of ongoing superhero fatigue from audiences.
Daredevil: Born Again has yet to premiere its second season, but Season 3 has already gotten the greenlight from Marvel. That means there are at least two more seasons where Elektra could return, either to help her one-time lover or take up her sais to try to put Daredevil in the ground. Either way, her intoxicating presence will be just what Disney needs to transform Born Again into the kind of must-watch show that the original Daredevil was.
