Prime Video’s The Girlfriend left viewers aghast with its ending, but also made them curious about whether Season 2 can happen. Now, Robin Wright, the show’s lead, executive producer, and director, has given an update.

The Girlfriend, adapted from Michelle Frances’ 2017 book, follows a tense triangle between mother Laura (Wright), her son Daniel (Laurie Davidson), and his new girlfriend Cherry (Olivia Cooke). But unlike the book — where Cherry dies — the show flips expectations by having Laura drown at the end. While Wright enjoys seeing fans debate Laura’s fate, she gave insight into the possibilities of The Girlfriend Season 2
“I truly don’t know,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “There are a lot of people involved, and if you’re working for a platform, you have to wait until the execs figure out the what, why, when and how. We’re not even there yet,” she added. And when pressed about whether Laura is dead or alive, she teased saying, “Keep wondering!”
The cliffhanger ending, where Daniel accidentally killed his own mother, left audiences divided over whether Laura truly died. Wright finds the ambiguity “fun,” adding, “People were like, ‘Oh, she could have been resuscitated.’ And also, ‘He could have let her die.’ So it’s kind of fun that people are wondering about what happened in the end [that we don’t show].”
Furthermore, Robin Wright emphasized that The Girlfriend works beautifully as a self-contained arc, if not with a Season 2. “If it didn’t get a second season, I would be completely satisfied. We had such an incredible team building this architectural game. You’re as good as your team around you. I couldn’t have done it without them,” she explained.
For now, Wright is content with leaving Laura’s fate and the show’s future up in the air. “You could close the show out,” she stated. The Girlfriend has made it to the Top 10 list globally for Prime Video.
