George was just seven when William and Catherine decided to give their son more details about his future. Writing in the biography Battle of Brothers, royal expert and historian Robert Lacey explained: “William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son [George]. Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself.”
He then added: “But sometime around the boy’s seventh birthday in the summer of 2020, it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince’s life of future royal ‘service and duty’ would particularly involve.”
The decision to keep their son in the dark for the first years of his life was reportedly down to “William’s unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start”.
Fans have previously declared that they were surprised that the royal couple kept the secret from George.
Taking to TikTok, one added, “Oh wow. It never occurred to me that he wouldn’t know”, whilst another added, “I feel like a movie is going to be made about this.”
Another added: “Prince George will be a great King one day, like his father.”
One user joked: “I think he might’ve figured it out when he woke up in a castle!”
Also parents to Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, William and Catherine are reportedly keen to ensure all three of their children experience as normal a childhood as possible.
Writing previously in his book Gilded Youth, author Tom Quinn said: “I think what William and Kate are really trying to indicate is that they will be involved much more with their children, especially their boys.”
