The Miami Vice ’85 Cast Is Predicted to Add These Actors (But It Ignores One Major Rumor)

Speculation on who will join the Miami Vice ’85 cast remains high ever since the reboot was officially announced in late April. When the title for the buddy-cop movie was revealed, the Universal production confirmed that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler would be cast as iconic detectives Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett. With Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski at the helm, this Miami Vice remake is set to be a major early summer blockbuster in May 2028 after a significant delay. The studio didn’t reveal any other cast members for the film (and the run-up to its release is going to be excruciatingly long), but that hasn’t stopped many from putting their money on seeing certain actors appear in the reboot too.

Tom Cruise is rumored to be cast in the Miami Vice reboot

The following actors are predicted to be included in the cast for Miami Vice ’85, according to a bet on Kalshi (as of June 12, 2026). Of course, it should be said that these are very early odds, and it will be years before the lineup for the reboot is confirmed, but at least the full results below show that many are in the running to make an appearance.

  • Miles Teller – 18% chance

  • Richard Madden – 15% chance

  • Ryan Gosling – 14% chance

  • Garrett Hedlund – 12% chance

  • Glen Powell – 11% chance

  • Taylor Kitsch – 8% chance

  • Jake Gyllenhall – 7% chance

  • Oscar Isaac – 7% chance

  • Pedro Pascal – 6% chance

One important caveat about this bet, though, is that it opened back in July 2025, well before Jordan and Butler were confirmed, and both of them weren’t named as options. A part of this list is really a Top Gun: Maverick wishlist with its inclusion of Miles Teller and Glen Powell. None of the options feature women, despite the 2006 Miami Vice film starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx having two female detectives played by Naomie Harris and Elizabeth Rodriguez, but that could be explained by the list being primarily focused on guessing who would play Rico and Sunny.

Nor does the bet include Tom Cruise, who has been widely rumored to be cast as the villain in the remake. Insider Daniel Richtman originally circulated the rumor, which is bolstered by the fact that the actor starred in Top Gun: Maverick and the 2013 Kosinski film Oblivion. This would be his first role as a villain since his portrayal of Vincent in the 2004 action thriller Collateral. Apart from the dark comedy Digger, which could lead to Cruise winning his first acting Oscar, the A-lister doesn’t seem to be slated to star in many other movies (nothing that’s officially announced at least), so it looks like his schedule would be open for a large production like this remake.

However, the rumor that Cruise would join the cast of Miami Vice was rejected on The Ringer’s podcast The Big Picture in late March. Host Sean Fennessey said that the rumor was “debunked” by a source close to him, while Bill Simmons, who was a guest on the podcast, agreed that it didn’t “pass the sniff test.” That said, there’s still a lot of time between now and the movie’s updated release date of May 19, 2028, and a blockbuster like this has a lot of room for many stars to play a part.

The title announcement for Miami Vice ’85 came with news that production for the movie would begin some time in 2026 and that it would be filmed for IMAX. Dan Gilroy, who won the 2025 Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for his work in the Star Wars series Andor, wrote the screenplay for Miami Vice. The logline for the reboot says that it is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series” and would portray “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami.”
