One of the sheet signs that a sci-fi series is truly great is that it doesn’t just entertain fans: rather, it turns them all into faithful apostles who can’t stop telling everyone how great the show is. Sure, it might risk alienating those around you, but it’s still worth proselytizing this TV show if you can convince even one person to check out this modern-day masterpiece. For me, that show is Orphan Black, and I’m here to spread the good news that you can now stream this Emmy-winning drama on Netflix.
The plot of Orphan Black is that a group of young women discover that they are all clones created by a shadowy organization. They try to discover the truth but are threatened by numerous foes ranging from shady biotech execs to crazy religious fundamentalists. And what they discover about themselves and the powerful forces that brought them to life may fundamentally change the world if it ever comes to light.

All of the female clones in the show are played by Tatiana Maslany, best known to Marvel fans for playing the title character in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. In Orphan Black, she is a true acting powerhouse, making each one of those clones a very distinctive personality and body language. It’s easy to forget that all these distinct characters are played by the same actor; once you remember, you’re likely to agree that Maslany is giving the performance of a lifetime, for which she rightfully won a Primetime Emmy.
The rest of the Orphan Black cast is very solid, including Dylan Bruce (best known outside this show for As The World Turns) as a clone monitor with his own mysterious past. Jordan Gavaris (best known for The Lake) plays one of the clones’ foster brothers, and he reprises this role in the spinoff Orphan Black: Echoes. Rounding out the main cast is Kevin Hanchard (best known for The Expanse) as a sympathetic detective who uses his police connections to help our protagonists in their many brushes with the law.

Orphan Black is one of the best and most ambitious science fiction shows ever created, and that’s not just my opinion as an avowed fanboy (shout out to the rest of the #CloneClub). In addition to Tatiana Maslany’s Primetime Emmy, the show won both a Hugo and a Peabody award. On top of these prestigious awards, Orphan Black also received a Golden Globe nomination and took home dozens of Canadian Screen Awards.
With all those major awards and nominations, it’s not surprising that Orphan Black has a Rotten Tomatoes critical score of 93 percent. Critics generally praised the show for its powerful acting (especially that of Tatiana Maslany), tight scripting, and its epic story. Fans agreed, and the show has a 92 percent critical score, revealing this show as one that almost everyone falls in love with once they watch it.
