“Where is Cordelia Cupp?” was a pivotal question in Netflix’s hit mystery series The Residence, and while the avian-obsessed detective might be more comfortable scouting for birds, actress Uzo Aduba looked right at home as she hit the red carpet tonight at the Emmys.
In no small departure from the detective’s go-to brown tweed suit, the star wore an elegant sleeveless gown with a black bodice and a swirling pink train by Safiyaa.
A modern love letter to classic detective mysteries of yore, The Residence centers on Aduba’s Cupp, a brilliant detective tasked with discovering the truth after the White House’s chief usher is found dead inside the presidential residence. The show features a hilarious, star-studded cast including Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Lee, Jane Curtin, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Aduba’s nomination this evening for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series marks her 6th Emmy nod—if she takes home the statue, she’ll be a 4-time winner.
“I grew up watching Clue and Murder, She Wrote, so I can remember those, and I’ve been a fan of Knives Out, but I don’t know if that was the center of the approach for any of us—certainly not for me,” Aduba told T&C earlier this year. She added, “Our show is set outside of the realm of politics, which I love because we’ve seen so many shows not only about Washington, D.C. but also the White House—but I don’t think we’ve ever had a show that is not only set in the East Wing but is spotlighting the people who have always been there. It asks the question: Who runs that house? And I think people will be surprised that it’s not who we think it is.”
Though the Shonda Rimes backed series was well received—it garnered 4 Emmy nominations this year—Netflix ultimately decided not to renew it for a second outing.
