Fans of The Night Agent are devastated by news that Luciane Buchanan will not reprise her role as Rose Larkin in season 3.
“The writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of season 2,” the actress, 32, told Deadline in an interview published on Friday, September 12. “So, we don’t get to see what happens to Rose, but I think it’s a really exciting time for the show, and who knows, it’s not a goodbye forever.”
Fans were upset by the development, with one X user reacting, “Bursting into tears.”
“They need to figure something out because The Night Agent without Rose is crazy!!!” another social media user wrote, while a third shared, “Well I’m not watching anymore.”
Rose became a beloved character during season 1 of The Night Agent in 2023, when she teamed up with FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) to thwart a conspiracy within the U.S. government and the two struck up a relationship. Rose returned in season 2 — which premiered in January — though she and Peter broke up at its conclusion.
In her interview with Deadline, Buchanan explained that the writers opted not to include Rose in season 3 for fear of diminishing her role.
“They called me not so long after season 2, and they were like, we’ve been trying to find a way to bring her in, but we want to do her character justice and not make her a sub-character,” she noted. “I totally respected that decision and agreed. I was like, if it makes sense to a story, I’ll do that. If it doesn’t, let’s not force that.”
Showrunner Shawn Ryan reiterated Buchanan’s statements.
“Luciane has been a beloved member of our Night Agent family for our first two seasons and her portrayal of Rose Larkin and Rose’s relationship with Peter has been a huge part of the show’s success,” he said in a statement. “We always envisioned the show as telling a new story each season with a revolving cast, and the story we broke for season 3, much to our chagrin, didn’t have a satisfying place for Rose.”
Both Ryan and Buchanan hinted at a possible return for Rose after season 3.
“I don’t believe that this means we’re done telling the story of Peter and Rose,” Ryan said. “I hope circumstances ultimately allow for the return of Rose to our Night Agent universe.”
Buchanan added, “Maybe we’ll make a little cameo along the way.”
