Why the ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel Title Is BrilliantAmazon MGM Studios
The search for more money awakens. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Amazon MGM revealed its slate of upcoming movies headed to theaters, chief among them the long-gestating Spaceballs sequel. Some ten months after the project was announced, a new pre-taped video presentation featured comedy sage Mel Brooks, who personally revealed the title of the movie—and explained why it isn’t the one you thought it would be.
“It’s me, Mel Brooks! I have a major announcement,” Brooks says in the video. “Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money is not going to be the title of this movie.”
In a note-perfect explanation, Brooks says that he already found the money. “There it is,” he says, with the camera zooming in on a duffel bag stuffed with cash. (Which, of course, is labeled “Spaceballs: The Money.”) “It was in my basement!”
Still, the writer/director says he’s been hounded for years for more Spaceballs. “Well, we did it. And the title is: Spaceballs: The New One.”
“It’s just like the old one, but newer” he says,.“That’s why it’s called The New One. There you have it. I’ll see you at the movies! And may the Schwartz be with you.”
It was 40 long years ago when Spaceballs roasted Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, and other ‘80s sci-fi to bits and became a comedy classic in its own right. Sure, it’s a bit of a missed opportunity for Brooks to not deliver on a joke teed up four decades ago. But Spaceballs: The New One is honestly the perfect title. The movie isn’t just poking fun at new sci-fi like Avatar, but nostalgia-driven legacy sequels, reboots, and remakes with generic titles. The New One says what it is on the tin can. It’s what your dad and uncle were literally going to call it at Thanksgiving. It’s a brilliant joke only Brooks and company would cook up.
In case you’re wondering: Yes, most of the surviving cast members are back. At CinemaCon, actress Daphne Zuniga appeared alongside Rick Moranis, who made a rare public appearance after a decades-long hiatus from Hollywood. Spaceballs: The New One will mark Moranis’ first live-action, on-camera performance since the 1997 comedy Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. Bill Pullman will also reprise his role as Lone Starr, with Lewis Pullman also starring as Starburst, the grown son of Lone Starr and Zuniga’s Vespa.
Importantly, Brooks is not directing Spaceballs: The New One. At 90 years old, the comedy maestro is basically retired as a director. But Brooks is closely involved with The New One, acting as a producer and co-writer with Josh Gad, Benji Sami, and Dan Hernandez, and of course, playing Yogurt and President Skroob once more.
CinemaCon attendees report the preview reel crushed the room. DiscussingFilm’s Andrew J. Salazar posted on X that the movie is “taking jabs at everything,” including the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Avatar, Marvel, and Hollywood’s tireless studio mergers. He adds that actress Keke Palmer stars as a new heroine modeled after Daisy Ridley’s Rey, while BB-8 is a “square box.”
There’s a lot of great movies coming out this year, but there’s only one Spaceballs sequel. I can’t wait to get the T-shirt.
