Ever return to an old favorite show and discover that it has somehow grown even better than you remembered? Because many TV comedies that have aged poorly (looking at you, Everybody Loves Raymond), you might be forgiven for thinking your favorite shows from yesteryear suck out loud if you tried to watch them today. That’s what I was pleasantly surprised to discover How I Met Your Mother is funnier than ever before, and anyone wanting to return to the glory days of primetime comedy can now stream this legen (wait for it) dary show on Netflix.
The loose premise of How I Met Your Mother is that future Ted is narrating to his future children the tale of how he met their mother. “Loose” is the right word because this frame story is mostly an excuse to showcase five charismatic characters dating and partying their way around New York City. Their relationships only deepen over time, but so does the mystery of who Ted is destined to settle down with.
The cast of How I Met Your Mother is consistently great, including Josh Radnor (best known for Liberal Arts) as a character constantly looking for love in all the wrong faces (his future self is voiced by Bob Saget). He is joined by Jason Segel (best known for Forgetting Sarah Marshall), who plays a law student trying to balance his studies with his personal life. Aside from drinking and getting into trouble, his personal life mostly consists of spending time with his girlfriend (Alyson Hannigan, best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer), an artist and kindergarten teacher who serves as the heart and soul of the group.
Another member of How I Met Your Mother’s core cast is Cobie Smulders (best known for The Avengers and other MCU films), a spunky news anchor who serves as an early love interest for Radnor’s character. Rounding out the cast is Neil Patrick Harris, who was previously best known for playing TV’s wunderkind medical professional, Doogie Howser. He instantly sheds his family-friendly image in How I Met Your Mother, playing a sex-crazed, suit-crazed ladies’ man always thirsty for another drink (and, of course, another conquest).
How I Met Your Mother wowed audiences and critics alike, so it’s no surprise that the show has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84 percent. Critics generally praised the show for its unconventional approach to storytelling and equally unconventional humor, all of which was enhanced by the chemistry of the show’s very talented cast. These characters might just be television’s best found family, and their nonlinear misadventures helped How I Met Your Mother take home a whopping 10 Primetime Emmys as well as a bevy of other major awards.
The success of this show meant that a spinoff was inevitable, and How I Met Your Father premiered on Hulu in 2023. It was set in the same universe as How I Met Your Mother and featured cameos from Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders, but this wasn’t enough for fans who wanted to see more of the original cast. And the show just wasn’t funny enough for general audiences, which is why this spinoff (which starred big names like Hilary Duff) fizzled out after two seasons.
I can’t in good conscience recommend watching How I Met Your Mother without addressing the elephant in the room: namely, that this show failed to stick the landing and had an infamously bad series finale. I really hated it at the time and shunned the show for years, but when I started streaming it again, I discovered that How I Met Your Mother was even funnier than I remembered. And I eventually got over my old man crankiness and decided that one bad episode shouldn’t keep me from enjoying a show with over 200 great episodes.
Will you agree that How I Met Your Mother is even better than you remember, or is this one show you’d rather enjoy a few “sandwiches” and forget? You won’t know until you suit up and stream this award-winning sitcom for yourself. If nothing else, its nine seasons of shenanigans will teach you more about the bro code than you ever thought possible!
