The Goonies actress Martha Plimpton revealed what it was like to work with John Matuszak, who wore intense makeup while playing Sloth.
The Task star appeared on a recent episode of Lovett or Leave It. While playing a game about her career highlights, host Jon Lovett asked her what Sloth was like on the set of The Goonies.
“Inaudible because he had all that prosthetic makeup and that whole mask,” Plimpton said. “The poor man was sweating.”
In the film, Sloth was the lovable black sheep of the Fratelli crime family who ends up saving the Goonies. He has distorted prosthetic facial features, which apparently made him difficult to hear.
Plimpton recalled that Matuszak was a “lovely guy.” The actor died at 38 in 1989, a few years after The Goonies came out. The cause of death was an accidental drug overdose.
The Raising Hope actress also remarked on the cult status of The Goonies. She said it was “very strange” that the movie has become such a coming-of-age classic.
“I don’t know,” she said. “It’s something about it. It’s just got some crazy magic thing about it.”

The Goonies cast reunited this year to discuss the film ahead of its 40th anniversary. A long-awaited sequel was also announced in February, with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus producing. The cast and director for the new installment have not yet been announced.
Despite excitement from fans, not everyone seems to be on board. Josh Brolin, who played big brother Brandon Walsh, expressed hesitance about a second movie.
“The movie is received so well, generation after generation,” he said to Entertainment Tonight last month. “It’s just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is].”
