Imagine two chimpanzees in a clearing. One picks parasites from the other’s fur. It is quiet. Intimate. This is how chimpanzees bond — one partner at a time, up to about fifteen close relationships.
Now imagine a tribe of 150 humans. They cannot groom each other. They do not have the hands or the time. So they do something else. They talk about each other.
This sounds like a strange claim — that gossip is not a flaw but a feature. But the evidence points toward something stranger: gossip may have been the evolutionary glue that allowed human civilization to form.
We tend to think of language as poetry, storytelling, philosophy. But the first words were probably not about the weather. They were about who did what to whom. Is Sarah trustworthy? Tom lied about sharing his meat.
In a tribal world, that information was more valuable than food. Knowing where the berries are helps you survive today. Knowing whether your hunting partner will share the kill helps you survive tomorrow. Betrayal could mean starvation.
So our ancestors developed a low-cost police force: reputation. Instead of fighting, they talked. Gossip enforced cooperation. It became the invisible hand that kept groups coordinated long before laws existed.
And your brain rewards you for it. Dopamine for having exclusive information. Oxytocin for sharing it. Social information is remembered faster and more accurately than dry facts — a 2015 University of Pennsylvania study showed this.
This is why you cannot stop checking social media. Your brain is addicted to the exchange of social information. Every notification is an ancestral campfire call.
But there is a cost. Your brain evolved for a tribe of 150, not for eight billion. Infinite gossip about strangers you will never meet creates anxiety, overwhelm, misinformation. We have the same hardware running software it was never designed for.
And yet. Cancel culture is not new. It is the same ancient mechanism scaled up. The question is not whether to gossip. The question is how to gossip well.
Because without gossip, there is no trust. Without trust, no cooperation. Without cooperation, no civilization. You are not being shallow when you share a piece of juicy information. You are doing exactly what 200,000 years of evolution designed you to do.
