Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be keen on a future UK return to the palace fold, but they may find they have been replaced by a new generation of royals. When Harry and Meghan burst onto the scene in late 2017 they were seen as the vibrant, fresh-faces of the older, possibly more stuffy, Royal Family.
A US actress marrying a British prince seemed like a Hollywood fairytale blockbuster, but it quickly became a Hammer Horror show. Leaks abounded about rows between the Sussexes and other royals, and stories started to emerge of Meghan reportedly snapping at staff and behaving like the new kid on the block.
Now – after their six year, self-enforced Megxit absence in the US and a few books and TV shows – the couple have started to sound out a return to Blighty.
But they may be shocked to discover that not only have they not really been missed, they may soon be supplanted.
As the sun has been setting on the House of York, following the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, there has been a marked rise in the interest and influence of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh Edward and Sophie, and their children Louise and James.
Only days ago Catherine, the Princess of Wales, melted hearts when she shared a sweet moment with her first cousin-in-law the 18 year-old James, Earl of Wessex.
The Royal Family had put up a united front on Easter Sunday as they headed to St George’s Chapel in Windsor for the annual church service – amid the Epstein furore.
But when Duchess Sophie was absent as she wbecause feeling “under the weather” and went with his father Edward, Catherine made sure James was at ease without his mum.
The princess was seen chatting with James before entering the church for the Easter Matins service with fans loving the sweet exchange – hailing James as a future royal star.
One remarked on social media: “Catherine is truly so loving. James, Earl of Wessex is such a sweet, young shy man. She just has a way of putting everyone at ease.”
Others pointed out how close the Edinburghs and Waleses appear to be – with Lady Louise also frequently hailed by royal watchers for her relaxed, down-to-earth manner.
Who can forget that strikingly telling image just before Christmas when unassuming Lady Louise, 22, was pictured sitting on the floor of a packed two-hour intercity train ride from London to Bristol doing some university work on her laptop.
Despite being 17th in line to the throne, Lady Louise had no qualms about squatting down and working on the floor of the train, because there were no other seats. She wasn’t fussed about First Class.
Both Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex, are too young to be working royals, with studies ongoing and their own lives to lead – but you can bet they will be offered roles if they want them in the future.
And if they do, where does that leave Harry and Meghan?
Up a Windsor creek without a paddle.
