I’ve felt more joy counting down to the HMRC tax self-assessment deadline than Harry and Meghan’s looming visit to the UK. Even before the Sussexes set off from California to a fanfare from US President Donald Trump, who will no doubt be thrilled to see the back of them for a few days, you just know their visit will become a circus.
And if it is a circus, then Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are both the ringleaders and the clowns – because they have already made a complete farce of the trip days before it begins. Is Meghan coming? Are Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet coming? Harry has reportedly been in tears when told the family will not be getting taxpayer-funded police protection. Are they seeing William? Why have they delayed responding to King Charles’ offer for them to stay at Sandringham when here?
It’s all up in the air and must be driving courtiers mad, as they rush to plan for every contingency.
Harry and Meghan never make things simple – and we might have to get used to it.
Recently it was reported that Harry and Charles’ staff thrashed out a rough agreement for a potential ‘half-in-half-out’ semi-working royal status for the Duke of Sussex.
When he is in the UK he and Meghan will park their rampant commercialism – they have an obsession with raking in cash in the same way people went crazy for toilet rolls during Covid, like they were going to run out – but when in the US they can flog as many clothes and scented candles and as much jam as they want.
But not only do most Brits not want the Sussexes stepping back into royal work, do we actually need them?
Prince William wants a slimmed-down monarchy for when he becomes King and you cannot imagine him wanting the secret-spilling Sussexes in his inner circle.
But also there is a young royal who may in time be absolutely perfect for working royal status – if she wants it, of course.
Lady Louise Windsor, 22, is as down-to-earth a royal as you can get.
She recently celebrated graduating with a degree in English literature from St Andrews University with her boyfriend Felix Silva-Clamp – before proudly posing with her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
It has been claimed she wants to take a gap year now while she considers whether to pursue a working royal role.
When she was born she weighed just 4lb 9oz while her mother, Sophie, was left suffering from severe blood loss and was separated from her much-longed-for child for several weeks.
She has since returned to the hospital to thank staff for saving her life.
Born with esotropia, a condition that turns the eye outwards – a common condition in premature babies – she had difficulties with her vision growing up and underwent two rounds of surgery.
Last November, it was reported that Felix had joined Lady Louise in their university’s army reserve unit, as their bond grew tighter.
One royal expert previously suggested Lady Louise has “carved out a role” for the future and will be a “real asset” as she never puts a foot wrong.
In fact you have to look hard to notice she is a royal at all. A few summer holidays ago she was grafting at a garden centre for £6.83 an hour.
Shoppers described seeing her working at the tills and praised her for being “polite and attentive”.
Then last Christmas the unassuming 17th in line to the throne was spotted sitting on the floor of a packed two-hour intercity train ride from London to Bristol, doing some university work on her laptop – after eschewing first class.
So not precious, or capricious – unlike some divas who are soon jetting into the UK – Louise is a real gem. Harry and Meghan may find on their return to the UK the Royal Family has quietly moved on from them.
