Michael Learned is getting candid about playing the matriarch, Olivia Walton, in the popular family drama,The Waltons, which had a nine-season run until 1981.
People magazine reported that Learned discussed portraying Olivia, who had seven children with her husband, John Walton Sr. (Ralph Waite), during a September 2025 episode of the Still Here Hollywood Podcast with Steve Kmetko. Learned explained that while she was grateful to be cast as Olivia, a part that eventually led her to become an Emmy-winner, she didn’t always think the material for her character was all that exciting. The 86-year-old actress explained this was the reason she exited the series following Season 8. In addition, she confirmed she didn’t regret her exit from The Waltons, as reported by People.
“It’s hard to say. On the one hand, I wept [when I left] because we were such a family. Even the crew. We were all really close and like a family. But on the other hand, I got tired of [it],” said the former stage actress during the podcast episode, per People. “They didn’t know what to do with me. [The show’s creator] Earl Hamner Jr. would say to me, ‘We want you in the shot.’ So they’d have me ironing and going, ‘And then what happened, kids?’ ‘And then where did you go?’ ‘John-Boy, more coffee?’ And things, just to have me in the scene. But as an actor, it was just boring.”
Michael Learned Shared Similar Comments About Being Unsatisfied With Olivia’s Storyline in ‘The Waltons’ in an August 2022 Interview
Learned discussed her dissatisfaction with some of Olivia’s storylines during an August 2022 interview on That’s Classic.
“I just got tired of pouring coffee,” quipped the Nurse star.
She also said she would voice her opinion about the show’s script to Hamner while filming The Waltons. The actress said, however, she did feel bad doing so because the series took inspiration from Hamner’s childhood in 1930s Virginia. She also described Hamner as “a true southern gentlemen.”
In addition, she clarified that she thoroughly enjoyed working with her Waltons co-stars.
“It was a dream cast,” said Learned, who stayed friendly with her former co-stars, during the 2022 interview.
