Michael Jackson’s son has revealed the wholesome reason his dad covered his children’s faces when they were in public. Prince Jackson, 28, the oldest of Michael’s children, opened up about his “unconventional” childhood in an interview with the LA Times.

Michael died aged 50 in 2009 from an overdose of propofol and other prescription painkillers. His doctor, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison. However, he would only serve two. Michael was the father to three children, Prince, Paris, 27, and Blanket, now called Bigi, 23.

Speaking about his upbringing, Prince said his dad treated him “like an adult” when explaining why they wore masks, and that the reason for wearing them was that “he wanted us to have our own life without him.“

Continuing, he added, “I don’t think I ever thought about whether other kids lived like that when I was younger. But once I knew who he was, I realised it wasn’t normal.”

Prince also explained that when he went to Disneyland, he thought it was normal for people to knock on the window and take photos of them. “You could say my whole life has been unconventional. I really love that, though, and it’s all I’ve ever known. It wasn’t until I saw a video of him performing and people were fainting and passing out, that I realised the work he did meant a lot to people,” the 28-year-old said.

Prince further noted that he didn’t wish to follow in his father’s footsteps, and chose to stay more out of the spotlight. “Music is a big part of my life. It shaped who I am because of my family, but I’ve always wanted to go into production and directing.”

Away from his career, Prince also founded a charity called Heal Los Angeles, which has a focus on improving the lives of young people in the city.

However, unlike Prince, his other siblings are more in the public eye. Paris has worked as an actor, singer, and model, whilst Jackson’s youngest son, Bigi (formerly known as Blanket), is a filmmaker and YouTuber.

Paris has called Michael “the best father you could ever imagine”, and says she remains close to her family. “I’m still very close with my brothers, and I see my family during family reunions and I tell them all the time, ‘If you wanna call me, call me. I’ve got love and respect for all you guys’,” she explained.
