ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Duke City has long been a go-to location for films and television shows thanks to its distinctive character, offering an average of 310 days of sunlight, a broad range of filming locations, an established and active crew base, and an additional tax incentive. Albuquerque’s film and television industries have developed swiftly, and the city now provides an assortment of creative and technical careers.
The film industry experienced a global setback during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. This affected productions in New Mexico for years and led to a worldwide slowdown in production overall. The decade was also marked by the 2023 Writers’ Guild of America strike, which lasted from May to September, effectively shutting down the national film industry. Despite these major setbacks, big-budget studio films, small-budget independent films, TV shows, music videos, documentaries, and more continue to be produced in New Mexico.
2023 Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer,” while largely filmed near Los Alamos, was also partially filmed in Albuquerque. Director Ari Aster’s fourth feature film, “Eddington,” had scenes filmed in the Duke City as well, although it was mostly filmed in Truth or Consequences. Vince Gilligan, creator of both “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” returned to Albuquerque to film his new show, “Pluribus,” with many members of the crews on both shows returning as well.
2020s
In 2020, Netflix Studios announced plans to increase both local television and feature production services, as well as its existing significant presence in Albuquerque. Several production-related businesses with headquarters in larger locations strategically chose to construct a divisional office in Albuquerque, like NBCUniversal, with a TV and movie studio established downtown.
