Things to do this weekend for St. Patrick's Day, 313 Day and more

This is no ordinary weekend ahead of us.

In Metro Detroit, the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day — which is Tuesday — is filled with bar crawls, corned beef sandwiches, parades and more. On top of all those shenanigans, Friday is 313 Day, and Saturday is the Detroit City FC home opener.is family

On top of the festive events showing city pride and love for the Irish, this weekend brings big downtown entertainment with “The Lion King,” Mike Epps and Cardi B.

Here’s your guide to all the fun happening throughout Metro Detroit.

Thursday

“The Lion King” opens at Detroit Opera House: This family-friendly musical’s anticipated run at the Opera House starts Thursday and goes through April 5. Special events throughout the run include “Kids Night on Broadway” on Friday and March 18, and Girl Scout Night is also on Friday. A captioned performance is on March 20 and the show on March 22 will be signed. Family four-packs are available for select performances. Friday

313 Day Specials: Many bars and restaurants, especially in the city, will be celebrating 313 Day with discounts that honor the city’s famous area code. Mootz Pizzeria + Bar will sell pizza slices for $3.13 from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Elsewhere downtown, the Shinola Hotel’s living room will offer complimentary champagne 4-6 p.m. followed by a DJ set from Detroit artist Shigeto. In Midtown, Mezcal Mexican Restaurant will have $13.13 margaritas all day, on top of their usual DJs and salsa dance lessons for Latin Fridays, 7-11 p.m. 

Grand opening of Parrots on the Ave: This new bar and restaurant on Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion celebrates its opening on 313 Day. Enjoy the new businesses’ food and drink menu, along with vibes from DJ Tychante and DJ Invisible. 3 p.m.-midnight Fri. 18985 Livernois, Detroit. (313) 646-4114. 

Shakespeare in Detroit: This production company has launched a griot season that kicks off with the premiere of “The Danger of Hope,” an original, one-person show. 7:30 p.m. Fri., 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sat. and 3 p.m. Sun. “Push & Paint” Album Release Party at UFO Bar: In conjunction with 313 Day, Bruiser Wolf and Sheefy McFly are celebrating the release of their album “Push & Paint” with DJs sets at the UFO Bar in Corktown. Raphy, Crate Digga and Celix the DJ are also on the bill. 10 p.m. Fri. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. 2110 Trumbull, Detroit. 

Saturday

Detroit Shamrock Festival and Corktown Bar Crawl: Drink whiskey and beer inside a heated tent all day at this annual party in downtown Detroit near Greektown. There will be face painters, DJs, barbecue food trucks and more social fun. Noon-10 p.m. Sat. $12.28 and up. 401 Macomb, Detroit. (248) 543-1000. Pedal pub bar crawl in Detroit: Travel from Detroit Shipping Co., Roar Brewing, Old Shillelagh, McShane’s and Anchor Bar on this pedal pub-powered crawl. Rides provided by HandleBar Detroit, Michigan Pedaler and Motown Boogie Bus. Tickets include entry to bars, “nonstop party vibes” and drink specials. Royal Oak St. Patrick’s Parade: Starting at Royal Oak Middle School and heading south down Washington, this annual parade is a festive event to ring in springtime. Noon Sat. Free. N. Washington between Willis and W. 7th. royaloakstpatricksdayparade.org.

Detroit City FC Home Opener: It’s the first game of the season for our hometown soccer team, which will battle Brooklyn FC. 4 p.m. Sat. $30 and up. Keyworth Stadium, 3201 Roosevelt, Hamtramck. detcityfc.com. 

St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Day at Century Banquet Center: The 20th annual Patrick / Joseph party is at the hall within the American Polish Century Club. Polish and Irish traditions will mix, including dancing, music, food and drinks. Mike Epps at Little Caesars Arena: Award-winning comedian Mike Epps brings his “We Them Ones” tour to Detroit this weekend with Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly, Chico Bean, TK Kirkland and Just Nesh. Sunday

St. Patrick’s Day Rooftop Party at Godfrey Detroit: This hotel’s I|O Rooftop Lounge will be the place to party high above the parade on Michigan Avenue below. There will be green beer and festive small bites. Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade: A Detroit tradition for nearly 70 years, this festive street parade takes over Corktown the Sunday before each St. Patrick’s Day. Things kick off early with the Corktown Races 5K and mass at Most Holy Trinity Church (1050 Porter). The parade is expected to be a two-hour procession traveling down Michigan from 6th to 14th streets. Expect traditional Irish musicians, pipe and drum outfits, color guard, clowns and more, including this year’s Grand Marshal John Heinzman, an engaged member of the Detroit Irish community. 1 p.m. Sun. Irish Takeover at Dakota Inn: This traditional German Rathskeller goes Irish for a day with live music, Irish food and drinks. Cardi B at Little Caesars Arena: One of the top female rappers of all time, Cardi B is finally on the road with a headlining tour for the first time in six years. In support of her second studio album, “Am I the Drama?,” the “Little Miss Drama Tour” is expected to include songs from the new album and her 2018 Grammy Award-winning debut, “Invasion of Privacy.” 8 p.m. Sun. Tuesday

Old Shillelagh: This Greektown Irish bar celebrates its 50th St. Patrick’s Day bash with three floors of festivities. There will be Irish beer, food and music all day, starting at 7 a.m. With Black Mist, followed by the Vernon David Trio, noon-5 p.m. The bar will also have festivities on Saturday and Sunday. 7 a.m.  Tues. 349 Monroe, Detroit. Gus’ Snug: This downtown Clawson Irish bar goes all out with a 2,000-square-foot tent, two stages of live entertainment, five bars, dancing, drinks, food and more. The party starts at  7 a.m. Tues., tent opens at 11 a.m. $10 cover. 38 S. Main, Clawson. Gussnug.com. 

Vintage House: This Macomb County banquet hall always throws a big St. Paddy’s Day party with corned beef sandwiches available for dine-in or drive-thru. Season opener at Octopus’ Beer Bar: This riverside bar returns for another season of tropical drinks, fireside chats and live classic rock on Tuesday. Expect Irish food, drinks and live music all day long. The menu features corned beef hash, pasty, Guinness beef stew, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips and more. 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Tues. 152 N. St. Patrick’s Day Fest in Bricktown: This 12-hour bash spans three bars in Detroit’s Bricktown, plus two tents. Party with green beer, shots, games, DJs and other festivities. Downtown Ferndale: An organized bar crawl in the area of Vester and Woodward supports local bars from noon to midnight on Tuesday. A $17 wristband gets you entry into the scavenger hunt, a raffle, a costume contest and an exclusive drink at Syndicate cocktail bar. There’s also a leprechaun costume contest and buffet at Smoke Haus, 4- p.m.-midnight. Get a ticket to the buffet and crawl for $55 the day of.
