Halloween is just around the corner. With it comes activities like haunted houses, trick-or-treating and, of course, watching horror movies.
For many, Halloween is the perfect time to cozy up and dive into a scary movie — or even a horror-movie marathon. And there are tons of options to choose from, whether it be classics of the genre or new movies coming to theaters.
Other people, however, are understandably hesitant to try out a scary movie. It’s a genre known for frightening viewers, after all.
But for those who are thinking about taking the leap into a spooky movie this Halloween season, the magazine Yardbarker released a list of the best horror movies for beginners.
One entry on the list was shot right here in Wilmington — and it could be the perfect choice for anyone trying to ease themselves into the horror genre.

Ethan Hawke to star in Blumhouse’s “The Black Phone,” which will start filming in Wilmington in February.
Which Wilmington-shot horror movie is one of the best for beginners?
Yardbarker’s list of 20 movies came in no particular order.
One of the films was the “The Black Phone,” which stars Ethan Hawke as a serial-killer known as “The Grabber” and Mason Thames as the young protagonist.
The story follows Thames as a young boy who is abducted by a serial killer and must escape by using a mysterious black phone, in which he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims, who guide him.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, “The Black Phone” was shot in and around Wilmington in 2021 — then under the name “Static.” The filming was based at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington.
Derrickson also directed the Marvel movie “Doctor Strange” and other horror films such as “Sinister.”
“The film falls more within the thriller category than the straight-up horror genre, making it easier to sit through,” Yardbarker said.
Ultimately, individual viewers will have to decide how they feel about that analysis. It is still labeled as a horror movie, after all, and could certainly provide plenty of fright.
