KANSAS CITY — The Detroit Tigers mounted a late-inning comeback to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Friday night, highlighted by clutch hits and a stellar performance from their bullpen. The victory keeps the Tigers in the hunt for a wild-card spot, while the Royals’ playoff hopes took a hit.

Royals’ Early Lead Fizzles

The Royals jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a home run, his 11th career leadoff homer. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a single, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, and Maikel Garcia capped the scoring with his 14th home run of the season.

However, Kansas City’s offense went silent after the first, going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position over the final five innings. A key defensive play by Kerry Carpenter in the sixth inning also helped preserve Detroit’s lead, as he leaped at the top of the fence in right field to snag a drive from Kyle Isbel with runners on the corners.

Tigers’ Lineup Delivers

The Tigers’ offense, led by the top four hitters in their lineup who collected a combined nine hits, chipped away at the Royals’ lead. Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter both hit two-run doubles, and Dillon Dingler sealed the win with a solo homer in the eighth inning, his 12th of the season.

Royals starter Seth Lugo struggled, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks in just 3 1/3 innings. In his seven starts since signing a contract extension, Lugo has an 8.35 ERA.

Bullpen Shines

After Chris Paddack gave up three runs for the Tigers, the bullpen took over and shut down the Royals. Four relievers held Kansas City scoreless on four hits. Kyle Finnegan (4-4) earned the win, pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts, and Will Vest secured his 20th save.
