Timothée Chalamet Reveals the Outfit He Was Warned Could End His Hollywood Career

Dune actor Timothée Chalamet has turned heads with his red carpet looks that prove he isn’t afraid to take some risks when it comes to his wardrobe choices.

In his December cover story with Vogue, Chalamet reveals he was warned against wearing one particular outfit at the premiere of his first major Hollywood movie. The year was 2017, and the now 29-year-old actor was ready to walk the red carpet for Luca Guadagnino’s film, Call Me By Your Name.

It just so happened that French designer Haider Ackermann ran into Chalamet wearing a pink Berluti trench coat. The Complete Unknown actor immediately became smitten and thought, “Oh, boom. That’s what I’m wearing.”

The only problem was that his publicist at the time completely shot down the idea, claiming it would ruin his career before it even started.

“It was like, ‘You’re not even going to get off the ground!'” recalled Chalamet to Vogue. He was told, “You’re going to ruin what you’re doing before you get going.”

Regardless of what his publicist thought, Chalament took the fashion risk and wore the pink trench coat to the Berlin Film Festival in February 2017. He paired the look with a black suit and dark t-shirt.

It’s safe to say that the fashion advice didn’t work, as Chalmet is now one of Hollywood’s rising stars. He not only remained friends with Ackerman, but also has a new publicist.

Chalamet has stunned fans with his red carpet looks that go far beyond the typical suit and tie, and a love for wearing the color pink. In 2022, he wore a backless red silk top and matching tailored pants at the Venice Film Festival.

At the Willy Wonka premiere, he wore a full pink suede suit with no shirt underneath. He kept the pink theme going where an all-pink Chrome Hearts zip-up hoodie, matching pants, and a tank top at the Berlin International Film Festival 2025.

“I’ve always loved the idea that….you know, you can appropriately express yourself through clothes,” said Chalamet in an interview with British Vogue.
