Spice Girls member Melanie Chisolm, aka Mel C, may have loved her time in the iconic girl group, however having to endure the paparazzi and tabloids at the time is something that’s stuck with her.
“Thankfully a lot has changed,” she said on the UK’s BBC Breakfast morning show on Wednesday. “There were certain things expected of us as young women in the industry that wouldn’t be allowed today, thank goodness that has changed,
“To survive that, it makes you quite tough,” she added.
The group which consisted Chisolm, Melanie Brown, aka Mel B, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell skyrocketed to fame in the mid-1990s with the release of their hit song “Wannabe.”
And despite the lack of social media at the time, paparazzi and newspapers didn’t hold back in their unfiltered criticism, something Sporty Spice says has gotten worse thanks to social media.
“They were really really cruel,” she said of the media at the time. “I feel for young artists now because there’s no escape, you know, social media, a lot of us sleep with it right next to our heads so theres always difficult things to deal with but w’ere just always navigating a different landscape aren’t we?”

But even in this day and age, the singer who just came out with her own single, “Sweat,” she’s always up for a reunion with the iconic 90s singers.
“I would be there tomorrow, obviously,” she said. “I’m super busy, new single out, record next year, I’m doing lots of live shows…but of course, I would always make time for the Spice Girls fingers crossed, I try to encourage everyone to manifest this happening.”
Most recently, various members of the group have reunited for appearances including at the premiere of Beckham’s Netflix documentary profiling her life as well as her foray and success in the fashion industry.
“We have so many incredible opportunities, we all have very busy lives, you see all of the girls are still out there doing lots of incredible things and it’s just the timing, agreeing on what we’d like to do, but we’re in constant contact.”
