WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester State University junior Catherine Shine will be featured in WSU’s Visual and Performing Arts Department’s production of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” this month. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, in Fuller Theater on the WSU campus. It continues at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22, and concludes with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 23.
Shine, a 2023 graduate of Leland and Gray Union High School and a theatre and communication double major at WSU, plays multiple roles in the show, including Lady Macduff, Bloody Sergeant, and Young Seyward.
When a trio of weird sisters foretell his rise to kingship, Scottish general Macbeth and his ambitious wife choose to usurp King Duncan to see the prophecy fulfilled. Combining themes of ambition, betrayal, and uncontrolled power, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy explores the question of destiny versus free will and the conflict between good and evil.
“Shakespeare tackled the ideas of power and corruption in a number of his plays, but never more bluntly than in Macbeth,” explains director Kim Carrell, a lecturer in theatre at Worcester State. “Having been told quite literally by fate that he will become king, Macbeth at first considers letting fate take its course, but soon chooses instead to take violent action to claim the crown.”
