Tracee Ellis Ross revisited Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, where she attended boarding school over 40 years ago
The actress said it was an emotional experience seeing her old dorm and reminiscing about visits from her mom, Diana Ross

Tracee Ellis Ross is opening up about her “emotional” return to the Swiss boarding school she attended more than 40 years ago.
The actress and avid globetrotter, 53, recently sat down with Travel + Leisure to discuss the July 20 premiere of season 2 of Roku Channel’s Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross. For the series, which follows the Black-ish alum as she travels the world alone, Ross recently took a trip to Switzerland to revisit the boarding school she attended decades ago.
“It was emotional and hilarious,” the Girlfriends star tells the outlet of her visit.

During the episode, Ross reminisced about her time on campus as a teen as she strolled through the main campus of Institut Le Rosey in Rolle, which is often regarded as the world’s most expensive boarding school. As she walked around, she could pinpoint the exact room she used as a dorm. She also remembered the entry gate where her mom, Diana Ross, 82, would often drive through for a visit.
“The years I was there were so impactful to me,” Ross tells Travel + Leisure. “The campus is very old school. My dorm was exactly the same — it is no longer a dorm, but the floor, the door handles were exactly the same.”
She adds: “It felt like being in a time machine. I couldn’t stop crying. Being an adult and revisiting a place… the whole show could be me crying in front of a dorm room.”

But Ross’ trip to Switzerland extended beyond Rolle. She spent a majority of most of her time in Gstaad, a community in the Swiss Alps where the institute boards its students during the winter months. For her accommodations, Ross stayed at the Gstaad Palace, a luxury hotel known for its castle-like architecture.
To fully immerse herself in the culture, Ross took part in some skiing lessons.
“My ski instructor was fantastic,” she says. “He also has a cheese farm. He brought me cheese. Hot cheese boy.”

For season 2, Ross’ other vacation destinations include Northern Thailand and Melbourne, Australia.
“I didn’t think it could get better than season 1,” Ross told PEOPLE ahead of the release. “I had a blast in Australia, Thailand and Switzerland! There was shopping, skiing, surfing, sheet masks, elephants, first dips, delicious food, wine, cheese, chocolate and thirteen year old Tracee… All while enjoying my own company.”

Season 1, which premiered in July 2025, saw the American Fiction actress travel to Morocco, Mexico and Spain. It went on to become the No. 1 unscripted show in Roku history, according to the company.
