Donald Trump has announced he will lift tariffs on whisky in honour of the King and Queen, bringing as much as £4m back to the British economy each week.
The US president announced the “gift” as the state visit came to a close, saying the royal couple had “got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!”.
It is intended as a major gesture at the conclusion of the four-day visit, in which Mr Trump and the first lady hosted the King and Queen in Washington, DC.
Writing on his Truth Social platform after saying an official farewell, Mr Trump said: “In honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful country, I will be removing the tariffs and restrictions on whiskey
He said that the gesture, as well as honouring the royal couple, was owing to “Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on whiskey and nourbon, two very important industries within Scotland and Kentucky.”
“The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful honor to have them both in the USA,” he added.
