Terri J. Vaughn as fictional Mississippi Lt. Gov. Antoinette Dunkerson in episode 101 of "Miss Governor." The show was renamed from "She the People" amid an ongoing lawsuit.

New episodes of a Tyler Perry show set in Mississippi will start streaming soon. If you’re excited to see how the cliffhanger resolves or waiting to watch any episodes until they’re all available, here’s what you need to know about big changes that affect the comedy series.

The show was recently renamed amid a lawsuit that alleged the title hurt a nonprofit that helped women in politics.

The first eight episodes premiered on May 22. The next half of the season will be available this week.

Here’s what to know about the new Netflix comedy that Perry writes and directs. (Beware: This article contains spoilers.)

Are She the People and Miss Governor the same show?

The show, originally aired in May as “She The People,” has now been rebranded to “Miss Governor.”

Why did it get a new name?

Aimee Allison, the founder of political action group She The People, is suing comedy series star Terri J. Vaughn, Netflix, Tyler’s production company Tyler Vision LLC and 25 unnamed defendants.

The suit was filed days before Netflix released the first episodes.

Allison founded She the People to help women of color who run for office or take part in other political pursuits. She said she’s used the name since 2018 across the nation.

The name has been used for political conferences and a podcast.

According to her lawsuit, Allison hired Nina Holiday Entertainment Inc. in 2020 to create a documentary about the group. She said they spoke with Vaughn, believing she was part of that company.

Vaughn reportedly worked with Allison on themes, interviews and more for the documentary series, which was meant to be called “She the People.” The lawsuit claims that all intellectual property was supposed to be retained by the nonprofit.

The lawsuit argues that the new comedy series “echoes many of the same themes regarding Black women’s experiences in politics that Ms. Allison addresses through her activism.”

Allison’s suit alleges that Tyler Vision tried to establish its own She the People trademark in September. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reportedly denied it in April.

Netflix announced the name change in early July.

Allison filed an amended complaint later in the month, and the suit is ongoing.

Is Miss Governor based on a true story?

Vaughn stars as Antoinette Dunkerson, the first Black woman to hold the office of lieutenant governor in Mississippi.

The character and the plot of the comedy is not based on one person or meant to be a true story.

According to information from Netflix, she “runs a successful campaign and now must figure out how to thrive under a sexist and condescending governor while attempting to keep her family in line now that they’re all in the public eye.”

The first half of the season ended on a cliffhanger.

A trailer for the second half of Season 1 shows Dunkerson taking the top office in the state after the governor unexpectedly dies. (The series title change also appears to be a clue to her shift in title.)

Viewer advisory: The clip includes adult themes.

When can you watch new episodes of Miss Governor?

There will be 16 episodes in all. According to Netflix, the first eight 30-minute episodes started streaming May 22.

The last eight will be released at 2 a.m. CT Aug. 14.
