The 0.43-acre lot at Rose Street and Avenue of Champions (Euclid Avenue) has several restaurants and a liquor store, including Bangkok House, El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, Tropical Smoothie, and Coliseum Liquors.
According to UK documents, the property will be used “for future development projects in the area,” potentially as part of a planned athletic fan entertainment district near Memorial Coliseum. The project, being explored by architecture firm Sasaki, aims to boost athletic department revenue through retail, dining, hotels, and other entertainment options, complementing plans near Kroger Field on the south end of campus.
UK Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart emphasized, back in January during a meeting of the Champions Blue board of governors, the need for new revenue streams amid rising college athletics costs, noting, “No different than a lot of businesses… we can’t be stagnant in terms of our thoughtfulness about how we’re trying to create revenue.”
The board also plans to vote on a separate Greer-owned lot at 1008 South Broadway for $1.425 million, though its purpose has not yet been disclosed.
