Every Saturday, the Artillery project presents a weekly selection of Ukrainian music released during the week. This time, attention was drawn to unexpected duets, the return of favorite performers, and new sounds from different groups. Special focus is on the duo of Shmiska and Anna Petrash, Yuvi’s return, and a variety of releases from Fiiolet, Stoned Jesus, and other artists.
Fiiolet presents the album Tropic of Capricorn (LP). The release is conceived as a boundary between peace and war: its concept sparks discussions about boldness in the development of pop-rock and the reflection of frontman Serhiy (Kolos) Martyniuk’s personal perception of light and darkness. Despite the ambitious theme, the record retains the band’s distinctive sound and does not go beyond its pop-rock concepts.
Stoned Jesus release Songs to Sun (LP). Frontman Ihor Sydorenko has joined with Andriy Rodin and Yurii Kononov, former members of White Ward. On YouTube the band shared video tutorials performing songs from the new album, adding interactivity to the release.
Key releases of the week
Shmiska and Anna Petrash present a joint track In the Evening – a surprising indie-pop collaboration in which both artists seek grounding in an unstable world. In interviews they explain that they lead double lives between Ukraine and France and share common experiences and fears related to uncertainty and the need to rely on themselves.
“It so happened that we are both indie artists and students abroad. We both have double lives, split between Ukraine and France. And we both share experiences and fears related to uncertainty and the frequent need to rely only on ourselves”
These releases also demonstrate a drive for experimentation: Yuvi returns to the characteristic expansive bass, whisper of vocals, and abstract lyrics, shooting a video with director Artem Plutalov and stylist Margarita Shekel, which underscores the visual expressiveness of the new material.
Anastimosa presents the second single from the upcoming album “Relativity,” which is slated for a premiere this autumn. The track is noted for its pomp and cinematography, with an emphasis on dramatic tension and the need for external validation.
Nitso Potvorno brings summer in a new key – a meditative track with influences of Indian music, telling the story of service in the Donetsk region and a vacation under the scorching sun of the Donbas, adding depth to the overall week’s atmosphere.
Yuvi – Khts completes another turn of returning to the style from the start of her path: powerful bass, whisper, and experimental lyrics form a distinctive sonic impulse. The video for the track was shot by Artem Plutalov and stylist Margarita Shekel, underscoring the aesthetic synergy between music and image.
Context and Additional Releases
DK Energetik releases 2×2 in the expanded version of the album “Tomorrow,” and Blooms Corda presents a video for the song “Striving Not to Lose One’s Mind,” where actor Illya Choporov demonstrates stage tension and the imagery of the narrative, and Danilo Haliko adds his calm voice to the unveiling of inner states. Sestra Blyznyuchka also contributes to the theme, creating a conceptual bridge between Kyiv and Kramatorsk in her composition.
This week from Artillery showcases the diversity of the Ukrainian scene – from lyrical experiments to rhythm-driven pop hits, allowing everyone to find something familiar. Browse the releases and discover new names and contexts in Ukrainian music.
