BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The longest active original act in the Southern Tier is releasing new music this weekend.
UnityGroup will debut their latest album New World during a release party and performance at Atomic Toms on Friday.
Established in 1997, UnityGroup is an ensemble that plays world fusion music, drawing inspiration from melodies and rhythm from different parts of the world. They are especially inspired by West African and Caribbean music.
Director Rob Weinberger says the band has had great success regionally sharing their music. He says live performances are a great opportunity for connection.
“Music has a spirit, there’s a flavorful quality to it, and I think at times an emotional quality that people can relate to. So, it’s something familiar and something exotic combined. We like to think of it as though we take people on a journey, get them involved, whether they’re listening or they’re dancing. And it’s been very successful over the years,” said Weinberger.
UnityGroup will perform at 8 on Friday.
Tickets are $10, $5 for students with ID, and can be purchased at the door.
Weinberger says there will also be an opportunity for local musicians to join them for a jam after the event.
