Dolly Parton has an infected kidney stone but chances of a full recovery are high, according to one doctor.
Last month, the 79-year-old country music icon canceled an appearance at her amusement park Dollywood. She took to Instagram to explain the reason for her cancelation and explained that she had a “kidney stone that was causing me a lot of problems,” resulting in an “infection.” Then, she postponed her Las Vegas residency due to “health challenges” which she also announced on social media.
Her sister, Freida Parton, posted a message on Facebook requesting prayers from fans as Dolly “hasn’t been feeling her best” on Tuesday, Octover 7. Then on the same day, she did a follow-up post reassuring fans that Dolly is okay, just “been a little under the weather” and that she “didn’t mean to scare anyone or make it sound so serious when asking for prayers for Dolly.”

Following Freida’s post, Dolly’s manager, Olly Rowland, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on October 7 that the matter got “blown out of proportion” and confirmed that she has kidney stones.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Express US, Dr. José Salvadó – a urologist at Case Western Reserve University – has gone into detail about kidney stones – specifically infected ones – and treatment options.
“When you have an infection with a stone means that you have an obstruction in your upper urinary tract. So normally, with that, you can get sepsis,” he said, adding that happens in around “10 percent of cases.”
Sepsis is a serious medical condition when the body has an extreme and dangerous reaction to an infection. Dr. Salvadó stated that in the cases of sepsis, they put a stent again in an endoscopic approach, which is the same way they largely treat a kidney stone. The endoscopic approach is when a camera is placed through the urinary tract without an incision. For the kidney stone treatment, the approach allows for the stone to be blasted with a laser.
During the case of sepsis, the stent is put in there to drain the urinary tract, and “then the patient will take around two to three weeks to totally recover from the infection.”
Dr. Salvadó explained the ways in which someone can end up with an infected kidney stone, and said it can happen through chronic UTIs because the minerals in the urine can create a stone.
Another way is the stone trying to pass through the ureter, which is a tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. The urologist said, “The stone gets stuck and then the urine that is not able to pass from the kidney to the bladder gets infected from the bacteria that we have in the bladder.”
Dr. Salvadó said that the percentage of surviving an infected kidney stone is “normally 95%.” He also said that an infected kidney stone could lead to multiple procedures, depending on it’s size. He also noted that kidney stones can come back and that there could be a risk of infection after the surgery to remove it because of prodecure being a minimally invasive one. Dr. Salvadó also added that the risk of sepsis is around 3% after surgery as well.
Dolly confirmed that she is alive and doing well in a video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, October 8. The 79-year-old addressed the health situation and speculations, while also sharing she is currently doing commercials for The Grand Ole Opry. She captioned the video, “I ain’t dead yet.”
“I’ve got some problems, as I mentioned, back when my husband Carl was very sick, that was for a long time, and then when he passed, I didn’t take care of myself, so I let a lot of things go that I should have been taking care of,” Dolly elaborated.
“So, anyway, when I got around to it, the doctor said, ‘We need to take care of this, we need to take care of that,’ nothing major. But I did have to cancel some things so I could be closer to home.”
