Usher is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit to offer opportunities for interns to learn the touring biz; applications are open now.
Usher is looking for a few good interns.
The R&B superstar — who is soon to launch his R&B Tour with Chris Brown, which will play a record three nights at Ford Field on July 2, 3 and 5 — is launching an intern program for the tour, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit and his Usher’s New Look organization.
Called the Entertainment Industry Club: Live Touring Edition, the program will select 10 interns from Detroit and Usher’s hometown of Atlanta to participate in an 11-week program in order to gain hands-on experience in the fields of production, wardrobe, multimedia, community impact, and operations as the R&B Tour hits the road.
Applications for the paid positions are open now through Friday via Ushersnewlook.org; applicants, who must be 18 or older, are encouraged to apply early.
“This program is opening doors and putting young professionals in a position to learn, grow, and work inside the entertainment trades,” Usher said in a statement. “It’s about giving them a real opportunity.”
Shawn H. Wilson, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit and co-founder of Usher’s New Look, echoed Usher’s words.
“The live touring industry is a multi-billion dollar global business — yet access to the entertainment trades remain limited,” Wilson said in a statement. “Together, we’re changing that by placing young professionals on one of the most historic tours and turning access into real pathways to lasting careers.”
In February, Usher attended the opening of the Detroit Entertainment Innovation Incubator, a new $1 million entertainment production facility for Detroit youth inside the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, inside Michigan Central.
Usher is a backer of the project, along with Detroit rapper Big Sean; both are Boys & Girls Clubs alums and members of the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Usher and Chris Brown’s R&B Tour was announced last month, and Detroit is one of several cities hosting three nights on the stadium tour.
