Sydney Hardeman, who went viral for her reaction to Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance, has died. She was 25.

Hardeman’s mother, Jamie Hardeman, confirmed her death to TMZ on Saturday, November 15, adding that her daughter died by suicide. Sydney was engaged at the time of her death and planning an April 2026 wedding.

Her family told the outlet that they noticed a “difference in her mood” following the death of her grandfather, though they are “still trying to figure out why she took her own life.” In life, her family shared that Sydney loved to play basketball as a child and during her time in college, and was beginning to embark in a career as a flight instructor.

Sydney went viral in 2018, after she traveled from Texas to California with her brother and best friend to see Beyoncé perform at the annual Coachella festival. She was memorably the first person at the gate, going on to wait 12 hours before the concert began. She went viral after her shocked response to Beyoncé’s set was featured in the singer’s documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé.

In a 2019 interview with BuzzFeed Sydney said of the moment, “I was expecting to see myself because I remember the cameraman being in my face the whole time, but I was so happy to be shown because it means Beyoncé knows my face exists.”

Sydney’s mother had a message for other Beyoncé fans in the wake of her daughter’s untimely death.

“You guys are young, and you are excited, you guys haven’t gotten to the good part,” Jamie told TMZ. “Lean on your village, Sydney had a huge village …sometimes you just need to be vulnerable to the people around you so they can help you. Parents are here to support you. It’s OK to be down, it’s normal, you haven’t gotten to the good part yet. Please keep going.”

Jamie added that Sydney “never meant to leave you. She loved all of you. In her name, make sure you guys are OK and find the support when you need it.”

A GoFundMe was also set up to support the Hardeman family.

“We’re creating this fundraiser to honor Sydney’s memory. Donations will go towards minority scholarships and for Sydney’s salvation foundation that is currently in the works to support mental health initiatives and suicide prevention of people of all ages and walks of life and that her legacy lives on forever,” the GoFundMe reads. “Our dearest friend and loved family member, Sydney Hardeman, passed away unexpectedly, leaving all of us heartbroken. Sydney was one of those rare people who brought light and laughter everywhere she went, confident, hilarious, endlessly kind, and full of life. She was an incredible pilot, deeply educated and passionate about everything she did.”

The GoFundMe organizers added, “Sisters of the Skies took her dream and made it a reality, she extended that encouragement to others through her presidency with the UAA OBAP chapter, mentoring and leading others to become as successful as she was. Sydney was also a devoted fiancée, excited about the beautiful future she was building. She made every day brighter for the people around her, whether it was with her quick wit, her big heart, or the way she made everyone feel loved and seen.”
