Experts say using YouTube was a return to his roots
Justin Bieber performed as a headliner at Coachella on April 12.
It’s one of the biggest music and arts festivals held every year in the desert in California.
Bieber performed while millions of fans watched live on YouTube.
Some were surprised to see him use a laptop to sing along with some of his old music videos instead of using an instrument or a live band.
And like many of us have done before, he watched some funny memes, too.
So what did it look like and why did Bieber do this?
CBC Kids News contributor Maya Endale is here to explain!
Bieber’s performance returns to his roots, experts say
Some artists at Coachella had high-value production in their shows, including a live band, backup dancers, light shows, pyrotechnics and more.
But Bieber decided to do it differently, said Katherine Singh, a pop culture writer from Toronto, Ontario.
“Some artists don’t need to be that way and it doesn’t necessarily make it a bad performance,” she told CBC Kids News.
Most of Bieber’s performance was simply him on stage with a microphone and a laptop, singing along to some of his old music videos on YouTube.
His performance was a return to his roots, according to Singh.
“That’s kind of how people came to know him. By the videos he posted on YouTube.”
Why fans have mixed reactions
Some fans enjoyed taking a nostalgic tour through YouTube to hear Bieber sing some of his old songs.
“They’re all, like, imagining when they were teenagers and they loved these songs,” said Greg Bryant, a music professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
“And now they’re adults and he’s an adult. It’s a unique experience,” he told CBC Kids News.
On the other hand, Bryant said that part of him sees Bieber’s performance as taking the easy way.
“You’re not really preparing a real performance,” he said.
“You’re just relying on your past success and almost anything you do will be good enough.”
