It’s a way to make music events more accessible to fans, expert says
Taylor Swift is headed to the big screen, again.
Starting on Oct. 3, she is kicking off the release party for her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, in movie theatres around the world.
The film is an hour and a half long, and it will only be in theatres for three days, until Oct. 5.
The movie will feature a music video premiere, behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot, lyric videos and Swift’s personal reflections on songs from the album, according to a statement from Cineplex, the company that is screening the movie in Canada.
This isn’t Swift’s first time heading to the movies with content for fans.
In 2023, she released Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour to accompany her global tour.
Other artists have also released tour movies, like Beyoncé’s Renaissance, also from 2023.
CBC Kids News took to the streets of Toronto, Ontario, to ask kids and teens if they would pay to watch their favourite artist in movie theatres.

Why are musicians headed to the movie theatre?
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was impossible to imagine thousands of people gathered at a concert to see an artist perform.
Artists had to pivot to online performances and other features to keep fans entertained at a distance.
That idea has evolved to where we are today.
Some artists see it as a way to include as many fans as possible, according to Morgan Milardo, the managing and artistic director of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Nothing beats the experience of a live concert, she said, but many artists with large fanbases, like Swift, also want to offer more accessible ways for fans to engage with their music.

“[Music in theatres] supports the growth of fan engagement and creates community and creates a safe place for fans to connect with one another and to feel like they’re that much closer to the artist at an affordable price point,” she told CBC Kids News in an interview.
She noted music and movie-related experiences, like Swift’s, are great for young fans who might not be ready for a big concert crowd, or the big price point of tickets.
She also calls it a smart business model for larger artists.
