Cregger’s sophomore feature after his 2022 sleeper-hit “Barbarian,” “Weapons” released on Aug. 8 with earliest preview screenings taking place at 2:17 p.m. the day before in a nod to a pivotal time in the film. The story focuses on a class of third graders who inexplicably go missing one night, with cameras capturing that all of the kids woke up and left their homes at 2:17 in the morning, run into the woods, never to return. What ensues is a community-wide frenzy involving the kids’ teacher, their parents, the local police, and the one kid in class who conspicuously remained. It’s an original urban legend with unexpected twists, enthralling scares and a deeply satisfying climax.
