it welcome to derry hbo

Here’s a thought I’ve never had before: There should be more scary clowns on TV. It’s not something I’ve ever wanted from a TV show before. I don’t particularly enjoy being scared. But after I watched the first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry—the Stephen King prequel series that premieres on HBO on Sunday, October 26—I was excited for horror fans. As viewers will see soon, the new series is one of the scariest shows ever put on the small screen.

Welcome to Derry is directed by IT’s Andy Muschietti, with Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise the Clown. The story follows a Black couple—played by Jovan Adepo and Taylour Paige—who move to Derry, Maine, in 1962. After a young boy goes missing, they start to find out that there’s something severely wrong with this town. Namely: Pennywise the Clown manifesting their fears into death traps. Thanks to Welcome to Derry, he’s now booked for ongoing terrors every Sunday.

“One of the great things about the book is no one ever gets to know the truth about It—and that’s where our curiosity goes,” Muschietti told Esquire in a must-read interview ahead of the show’s debut episode. “We’re always keeping either the same mystery or creating another mystery … But obviously the spirit of cryptic-ness is always around because that’s the spirit of the book.”

For Stephen King fans, Muschietti includes even more of his oeuvre than just IT as well—but we’ll keep from spoiling any of our favorite easter eggs for now.

How Can I Watch IT: Welcome to Derry?

Welcome to Derry premieres on HBO on Sunday, October 26, at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT. The series is also available to stream on HBO Max. Derry will run for eight episodes every Sunday night until the finale on December 14.

If the series is successful, Muschietti and Co. are already planning multiple seasons that go back in time with each new release. The creators are “basically making a season with each event,” according to Barbara Muschietti. “So, the seasons would be 27 years in distance from each other.” King reportedly loved the idea.
