We started last year obsessing over Severance, and we ended it poring over Pluribus. But only one show stood tall at the Golden Globes. At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, the award for Best Television Series – Drama went to none other than The Pitt.
On Sunday night, the annual Golden Globes took place at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California. Toward the end of the evening’s ceremonies, the Golden Globes awarded The Pitt for Best Television Series – Drama. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill delivered the speech, accompanied by Noah Wyle, who also won his own Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.
After thanking the Golden Globe voters, Gemmill joked that in the event they made a mistake: “we are not giving this [award] back.” Gemmill then thanked their producing partners at Warner Bros. and HBO Max. “It takes a village to put on a show, or in my case, a village idiot,” Gemmill said in a self-deprecating manner. “I have two of the best partners in crime: the incomparable John Wells, [and] the Golden Globe-winning Noah Wyle.”
Gemmill then extended his thanks to the “great village” of people who help make The Pitt possible. “We have the best crew. We have the best writers. We have the best producers, and doctors, and an incredible cast.”
As is becoming tradition with The Pitt, Gemmill tipped his hat to healthcare professionals. “I also want to thank the first responders and healthcare workers who are the real heroes who inspire us. And Deborah Cahn, from The Diplomat, reminded me I have to thank all the civil servants as well.”
Gemmill ended his speech acknowledging the greater plight of America, which is unfolding right now in Minneapolis, and thanked the entire room for being storytellers.
“We live in a divided country, in a [divided] world right now. But I think cinema… brings us all together, not only as an audience but as a community. We show people what we can do when a bunch of individuals have a common goal. We work together with decency and humanity, acceptance and respect for each other. We can do amazing things. I want to thank everyone in this room, because what you do, the stories you tell, they make a difference.”
In its category, The Pitt beat out other acclaimed shows like Slow Horses, The White Lotus, Severance, The Diplomat, and Pluribus. Of all of them, Pluribus is the newest show with just one season. The Pitt began its second season this past weekend. It seems like The Pitt‘s dynasty has only just begun.
