According to Harry’s official announcement (which was shared with his text subscribers and in an Instagram post on January 20), “Aperture” is dropping on Friday, January 23 at midnight U.K. time. That means it’ll likely drop for U.S. fans on Thursday, January 22 at 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST.
So, what does “Aperture” even mean?
If you haven’t dabbled in photography at this point in your life, odds are you’ve never even heard this word. According to Merriam-Webster, “aperture” can mean one of two things: 1. an opening or open space, or 2. the opening in a photographic lens that admits the light. Which is interesting, considering how much this man has teased lights and cameras leading up to his announcement.
Has Harry shared any “Aperture” Easter eggs?
Yep. It may all lead back to the “Forever, Forever” video he released on December 27, where he played a piano instrumental in a specific light. The first frame of the eight-and-a-half-minute video also emphasizes three lenses on a fan’s phone camera. Interesting!
Then came webelongtogether.co and its accompanying billboards around the world on January 12. The website originally featured a moving image of a crowd during a concert, and the same photo was seen on digital billboards with the tagline “Let the Light In.”
And, of course, we can’t help but point out the fact that Harry’s new merch includes a limited edition camera box set, which features a film camera, fanny pack, and CD. Unfortunately, it’s already sold out—but it’s still a major clue for his upcoming musical era.
While nothing has been confirmed, fans theorize that the song will likely be a play on letting lighter moments into our lives and capturing them along the way.
