What you didn’t see on TV, from the show to the Governors Ball

While millions tuned in to watch the 2025 Emmys from home, much more unfolded inside the Peacock Theater in downtown L.A. on Sunday night that viewers didn’t see. After braving a hot red carpet, stars made their way inside for TV’s biggest night, and Gold Derby was on the ground inside the theater — and later at the Governors Ball — to capture it all.

The Nominee Logjam

Roughly 20 minutes before showtime, the lobby was buzzing. The Studio star Seth Rogen made his way to his seat as theater-goers yelled out, “Good luck!” Jenny Slate was spotted deep in conversation with Dying for Sex Emmy-nominated director Shannon Murphy, while Only Murders in the Building duo Steve Martin and Martin Short arrived around 4:40 p.m., followed closely by Dying for Sex’s Michelle Williams. Reba McEntire made a quiet entrance just moments later as Bad Sister’s Sharon Horgan calmly headed to her seat. With just five minutes to spare, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson entered hand-in-hand, quickly ushered to their front-row seats as the show was about to begin.

The Show Behind the Show

Severance star Tramell Tillman took home one of the night’s first major awards and made history as the first Black man to ever win Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. While viewers at home saw the emotional moment, what they didn’t see was that Severance producer-director Ben Stiller was the first to leap out of his seat and begin clapping loudly, as others soon joined him.

The theater collectively gasped when Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere) won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Moments after his win, Harrison Ford, who lost in the category, was seen still in good spirits, chatting with wife Calista Flockhart and Shrinking costar Jason Segel.

During commercial breaks, the audience was treated to clips of Emmys flashbacks that featured acceptance speeches from the likes of Barbra Streisand, Alan Alda, Merritt Weaver, and Jackée Harry.

Hannah Einbinder was the first — but not the last — celeb of the night to get bleeped, exclaiming, “F–k ICE” during her acceptance speech. While TV audiences heard the censorship beep, the in-person crowd got the full, uncensored moment. Later, John Oliver’s speech for Best Scripted Variety Series drew laughs when he too was censored for saying, “F–k you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money to you!” — referencing the Emmys’ 45-second speech cutoff and its fine.

Loud boos could be heard when TV Academy chair Cris Abrego mentioned that Congress had cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. And the excitement for one of the night’s most anticipated wins — Stephen Colbert — was palpable inside the theater. The crowd began cheering and rising to their feet even before his name was officially announced, and once it was, the room exploded in applause.

Time to Celebrate

After the show, guests slowly made their way to the Governors Ball to celebrate. There was a The White Lotus reunion as Jason Isaacs, Carrie Coon, Jon Gries, and Charlotte Le Bon caught up. At one point, Coon began dancing near her table when Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” began to play on the dance floor.

Hiller celebrated his Emmy with a glass of Blue Label Johnnie Walker whiskey and told Gold Derby of his win, “It’s unbelievable. I think you all know better than anybody that this was unexpected. It was unexpected and it was a thrill and it was so exciting. I was so happy. It’s a little validation, which feels really nice.”

Meanwhile, Hannah Einbinder headed to the engraving station with her Emmy in one hand and her high heel shoes in another.

Presenters Ray Romano and Brad Garrett enjoyed some of the mini cupcakes by the dessert bar while Lauren Graham, who earlier in the evening had a Gilmore Girls reunion with Alexis Bledel, chatted with friends.

Adolescence’s Stephen Graham and his wife Hannah Walters and their two kids celebrated Graham’s Best Actor and writing wins for a limited series at the gala’s engraving station, where they hugged and took selfies as his gold statue was engraved.

The Pitt‘s Katherine LaNasa was one of the last stars to arrive at the gala and looked genuinely thrilled as she entered the lavish party with her husband Grant Show holding her Emmy, saying, “Oh my.” Soon after, her costar and fellow Emmy winner Noah Wyle arrived with his wife. As he entered the building, chants of “Hold up your trophies!” could be heard, and he raised his Emmys in the air to celebrate his big win.

Around 10 p.m., Rogen was spotted heading to his car and needed help carrying his four Emmys. Luckily, his wife was able to carry two as he carried two, while fans — this time instead of yelling, “Good luck!” — yelled out, “Congratulations!”
