The Chicago White Sox notched their fourth straight win after beating the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in a thrilling encounter at Rate Field on Wednesday.
The win, however, was marred by a scary incident at the bottom of the third inning after a fan fell into the bullpen of the Royals.
According to a report from ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle, the fan stumbled over a railing after getting up from his seat during Chase Meidroth’s sacrifice fly.
The game was not stopped until the top of the fourth inning. The fan fell from 10 to 12 feet.
“After Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. walked, the game was halted when a stadium official flagged the attention of umpire crew chief Chris Conroy, alerting him to the incident unfolding in the bullpen. Both managers were summoned from their respective dugouts for an explanation,” wrote Doolittle.
The fan was rushed to the hospital.
The White Sox have yet to issue a statement or provide an update, as of writing.
“The medics were called to the visitors’ bullpen to provide treatment, while White Sox officials were briefed on the medical emergency,” said ABC Chicago 7’s Lissette Nuñez.
The MLB has repeatedly reminded teams to ensure the safety of fans in stadiums, urging them to continue educating spectators about possible dangers.
Nick Mears said they prioritized the fan’s condition after learning about what happened.
“Baseball is just a game. Obviously, human lives are something different. Just created space for all of the people to come in and try to help him out,” said Mears, as quoted by Doolittle.
The White Sox improved to 21-21 and reached .500 for the first time since March 2025.
