Jackson Suber leads The 154th Open after a superb opening round of 65 at Royal Birkdale.
An outstanding approach shot to the 17th provided the highlight of the American’s five-under-par round, setting up an eagle that lifted him one clear of Sungjae Im and Daniel Brown.
Im and Brown played together in game seven and each carded 66s on a day of warm weather in Southport.
Alex Smalley made it to five-under with one to play, but a wayward tee shot on the 18th led to a double-bogey. He is joined on three-under by the likes of Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, Robert MacIntyre and Francesco Molinari.
