NYT Connections Answer for Today, June 5, 2026

Who Won Sofia Vergara’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ Live Buzzer Tonight originally appeared on Parade.

A new feature for Season 20 of America’s Got Talent is the Live Golden Buzzer, which will be awarded by one of the judges – Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel or Sofia Vergara – each week and which will take the recipient directly to the finale.

This week the honor of bestowing the Golden Buzzer went to Sofia and she awarded it to country singer/songwriter Steve Ray Ladson, who first caught America’s attention for his performance of “Back of My Truck,” which went to No. 2 on the iTunes country chart after his AGT performance. It didn’t hurt that Simon declared the song a hit.

For his Live Show performance, Steve performed another original song, “Ain’t Nobody Got Boots Like Mine.”

“Being on the Live Shows is living my dream,” Steve said. “A lot of people don’t get any shot, so I am giving it my all. I didn’t come this far to sing somebody else’s song. My plan is to sing another original. I don’t want to be a one-hit wonder. I plan to bring the house down.”

And Steve, who hails from Hopkins, SC, did more than that, he won the Golden Buzzer.

“I feel good,” Steve told host Terry Crews of winning. “I feel like James Brown. I’m ready to get down.”

In his video package, Steve explained that he grew up on a farm, which was not the most glamorous, and it was in a small town.

“My mom worked at a grocery store and my dad was a minister,” he said. “Every day [I was] tending to the animals, making sure their stalls were clean. Music was the only thing we had. I got the chance to play with other bands, but I never got to make it my own thing. I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’”

And with his trip directly to the Season 20 finale, Steve may get a chance to do just that.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.

Tune in on Wednesday night to find out which three contestants America voted through to the semi-finals and will still have a chance to make the finale.
