Whoopi Goldberg has served as moderator of The View for almost two decades.
The 70-year-old performer and co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farrah Griffin debate ‘hot’ topics and discuss current issues on the popular ABC talk show. Whoopi is known for her strong opinions, especially regarding Donald Trump and other MAGA figures.
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail, the push for Whoopi’s departure after two decades behind the desk stems from claims that the Ghost star is unable to afford retirement despite her $8 million/year salary and repeated public spats with conservative guests and co-hosts.
However, the insider also suggested that producers may be baiting Whoopi by booking more right-leaning guests, such as RFK Jr.’s wife, Cheryl Hines, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The insider revealed that the show’s “producers and the ladies believe all the negative talk of turmoil is coming from those in the Trump administration and other Republicans that don’t like the show or the ladies.”
They also noted that “many believe that a continued effort is being made to put negative news out there to get a reaction and also for them to materialize it to become true.”
Former View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck recently returned to fill in for Alyssa while she was on maternity leave, which was reportedly a “strategic” move by showrunners to “push” Whoopi out. The conservative pundit’s return to the View, according to sources, was treated as a “test” for Whoopi and longtime host Joy, who is also outspoken about her personal politics.
Despite rumors of behind-the-scenes turmoil and Whoopi’s past suspensions over on-air remarks, “the ladies are all content with keeping their jobs,” said the source, who went on to say, “People behind the scenes are happy with how the show is going and having Whoopi at the helm.”
Whoopi took over for Rosie O’Donnell as The View’s moderator in September 2007, and has been a fixture at the desk for the last 20 years.
With the Sister Act star at the helm, the long-running daytime program has seen its highest viewership in the last five years as the network continues its efforts to appeal to a broader, more conservative audience. With more right-leaning figures platformed by the program, on-air clashes and heated debates are almost expected, fueling speculation of behind-the-scenes tensions.
“Even with Republican voices on the show, they still get a lot of hate and rumors of people leaving,” the source said.
When it comes to the chatter, the insider said that the cast does not “want to address” the ongoing speculation as “nobody wants to give the rumors more life,” as the gossip becomes “a day-to-day ordeal” at The View.
