“Whose Line Is It Anyway?” star Colin Mochrie has postponed several shows due to a serious eye condition that requires emergency surgery.
The Instagram page for Mochrie’s traveling hypnosis-improv fusion show HYPROV announced the news on Friday, Jan. 2.
“Colin has been diagnosed with a detached retina and will be undergoing emergency eye surgery today. His medical team is optimistic about his full recovery, but he needs time to rest and heal,” the statement read. “Colin is incredibly grateful for your support and well wishes. He looks forward to being back on stage and sharing many more laughs with all of you in the near future.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, retinal detachment is an emergency which can lead to permanent vision loss in the affected eye if not treated quickly. Symptoms of retinal detachment include reduced vision, sudden appearance of dark floating shapes or flashes, blurred vision, a curtain-like shadow over the field of vision and loss of side vision.
HYPROV’s “upcoming shows will be postponed” as Mochrie prioritizes his health.
“We understand this news is disappointing for those who were looking forward to the performances and we truly appreciate your understanding. We are currently working on rescheduling the shows, and all tickets will be honored for the new dates,” the improv group said, noting that refunds will also be an option.

Mochrie, 68, is best known for his appearances on the improvisational comedy show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The American version of the show originally aired from 1998 to 2007 before being rebooted in 2013. Mochrie has starred in all 21 seasons, as has Ryan Stiles.
Mochrie co-created HYPROV with his manager Jeff Andrews and hypnotist Asad Mecci. Mochrie and Mecci did their first performance in 2015. According to the Hyprov website, twenty audience volunteers take the stage during performances.
“Within minutes, Asad Mecci guides them into a state of fearless creativity. The most receptive ‘Hyprovisors’ then join Colin Mochrie to perform a completely improvised comedy show — while hypnotized,” the website’s description reads.
“Whose Line Is It Anyway?” is available to stream on Apple TV.
