Playdate may have only just arrived on Prime Video, but talks of Playdate 2 are already heating up. Director Luke Greenfield has opened up about sequel prospects for the Alan Ritchson and Kevin James action comedy.

Luke Greenfield opens up on Playdate 2 possibilities

Playdate, which premiered on November 12 on Prime Video, has got fans speculating about what comes next. Director Luke Greenfield revealed that early talks for Playdate 2 are underway and that his primary focus was always on creating a solid standalone movie.

He explained to ScreenRant, “I mean, this is a massive franchise. Everyone knows it. When I go into a movie, I’m just so focused, again, as a writer-director, on making the film great. I don’t really go in usually of like, ‘Okay, how do I make four of these?’ Because you’ve got to have the foundation. When you go to Lethal Weapon, when you go to Beverly Hills Cop, those originals are so fantastic. And then, when you make it just outstanding, the world is like, ‘Where’s the next one?’”

This strong foundation, Greenfield hints, is exactly what Playdate has built. He confirmed that Amazon wants more content and that he has already begun brainstorming with writer Neil Goldman.

“Obviously, Amazon is primed to go, and I’ve begun talking to Neil about that. We actually have some very funny ideas for what’s next. I’m sure that’s gonna start happening pretty quick,” Greenfield stated. This indicates that development on a sequel could move forward at a rapid pace.

The film, which stars Kevin James and Alan Ritchson as two dads whose playdate with their sons turns into a life-or-death fight against mercenaries, seems poised for expansion despite a rocky critical reception.

Playdate currently holds a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics panning its humor. On Popcornmeter, it holds a 54% score. However, the power of its streaming platform and the star power of Alan Ritchson, fresh from his success in Reacher, may be all the justification needed.
