Why Jack Lowden Skipped the 2025 Emmys

At the Emmy Awards tonight, Slow Horses is up for five awards, including Best Drama. While numerous members of the Apple TV+ thriller were in attendance, one was notably missing: Jack Lowden, who plays River Cartwright.

Lowden and wife, actress Saoirse Ronan, recently welcomed their first child. Last year, Ronan opened up in a rare interview about motherhood, saying, “I became successful when I was quite young. It meant that by the time I found my partner, I’m now at the stage where if it happened, I would like to have a kid…I feel fortunate enough that if I step out of this for a minute, I’m hopefully not giving it up forever. But I’ve always wanted that.”

While neither often speaks about their relationship, Lowden did talk about why he loves being married to a fellow actor. “Being with an actor is wonderful, because we understand each other,” Lowden said in an interview about being married to Ronan. “We’re quite odd people, actors. We’re strange animals. So it just makes complete sense, and I understand why there are loads of other actors with actors.”

He added, “And it’s really useful for running lines, rather than with, like, your mum. Is it hard to maintain privacy? I don’t know. I think I’ve been very lucky in that I’ve had quite a slow-building kind of career, and I’ve been allowed to grow up and get things wrong. I can’t imagine what it must be like, if you’re 18, 19 and you’re in a huge show and all of a sudden everybody wants to know everything about you.”

Lowden is also currently filming Netflix’s Pride & Prejudice, where he is set to play Mr. Darcy. Slow Horses season five will premiere on Apple TV+ later this month; the show has already filmed a sixth season and was recently renewed for a seventh.
