Miley Cyrus hasn’t completely turned her back on some past experiences, including her long-term relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
In an interview with Vogue, published on September 24, the Grammy winner revealed that she’s held onto a few personal keepsakes from her time with Hemsworth. “I literally have a dress that I had on when I met my ex-husband, and then I have my dress that I wore on our first date,” Cyrus shared. She said she’s also kept “letters” and items that help her “savor these kind of beautiful moments of my life,” adding, “but because these intimate moments have also been public moments, it’s a little bit tough to decide what piece I want to share and what I would ever allow to be seen.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth first met in 2009 on the set of their film, The Last Song. Their on-screen chemistry turned into a real-life romance that spanned the better part of a decade. After years of breakups and reconciliations, Cyrus and Hemsworth got engaged in 2016 and quietly married at Cyrus’s Tennessee home in December 2018, just weeks after losing their Malibu, California house in the Woolsey Fire. But less than a year later, the couple announced their separation, and their divorce was finalized in early 2020.
On her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series in 2023, Cyrus revealed that she decided the marriage was over by the time she performed at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2019. Although their marriage “came from a place of love first,” it also came from “a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could,” she said. “The day of the show was the day that I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship.”
Cyrus also alluded to their divorce this year in May while promoting her visual album, Something Beautiful. In a Q&A at a Spotify event, she said, “And I guess for me, when my house burned down, a lot of my relationships also burned down. And that, again, just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude.”
Hemsworth has largely stayed private in the years since their split. But his current fiancée, Gabriella Brooks, announced their engagement earlier this month on September 12. Cyrus, meanwhile, has been dating drummer Maxx Morando since they were first romantically linked at the end of 2021. The pair met on a blind date, Cyrus told British Vogue in 2023.
The couple collaborated on the singer’s latest album, with Morando appearing in the music videos for “End of the World,” “Walk of Fame,” and “Reborn.” In a 2024 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Cyrus said, “I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
