Morgan Neville had no shortage of famous faces for his new Lorne Michaels documentary, but one well-known SNL alum didn’t make the cut. The director revealed why Pete Davidson is absent from Lorne despite the comedian’s deep personal connection to the legendary producer.

Morgan Neville reveals why Pete Davidson does not appear in the new Lorne Michaels documentary. The director says scheduling conflicts and an overflow of material kept Davidson out of the film. Neville told PEOPLE that after interviewing John Mulaney, the project simply felt complete.
“I interviewed so many people for the film, and at a certain point, after I’d interviewed [John] Mulaney and he had said everything he had said, I just didn’t know where we were gonna put more voices,” Neville said. “It just felt like it was full, you know?” Davidson served as an SNL cast member from 2014 to 2022. He has previously described Michaels as a formative mentor and father figure in his life.
Neville also confirmed that Davidson had scheduling conflicts when production began on the documentary. The director recalled not knowing “where anything’s gonna fit” with so many SNL alumni eager to participate. Lorne features interviews with Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien, Maya Rudolph, and Andy Samberg.
“That was the hard part,” Neville said. “It was like an embarrassment of riches, that you could interview a thousand people about Lorne Michaels. So many people have stories.” The filmmaker focused on keeping the documentary centered on Michaels rather than the many celebrities surrounding him. “I was just trying to distill his essence into a film,” he explained. “A lot of those stories are not about Lorne, they’re about those people.”
Mulaney opens up in the film about Michaels’ supporting him during his 2020 rehab stint. The executive producer offered to “stay on the phone with him” for as long as needed. Davidson previously discussed his bond with Michaels in the 2025 documentary SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.
Lorne, released on April 17, currently plays in theaters nationwide from Focus Features.
