Robert Pattinson is embracing his villainous side.
The Twilight star, 40, spoke with PEOPLE about playing The Odyssey‘s main antagonist at the movie’s world premiere in London on Monday, July 6.
Asked if he enjoys exploring his bad side, he says: “I do. I like lowering people’s expectations; that’s always my favorite, that’s always my place to be. Undersell and overdeliver, that’s my motto.”
In The Odyssey, Pattinson portrays Antinous, who vies for Odysseus’ (Matt Damon) wife Penelope’s (Anne Hathaway) hand in marriage during the years the hero goes missing after the Trojan War. Antinous seeks to marry Penelope during Odysseus’ absence, take over his position as the king of Ithaca and eliminate the couple’s son Telemachus (Tom Holland).
On the red carpet, he shared his personal impression of Antinous’ place in The Odyssey. “I don’t think he’s really the bad guy,” he says of his character. “I think he’s just like. . . It’s a love story, it’s a love story. Penelope is just waiting for Antinous to get older.”

Of course, Pattinson will also play a major villain in another blockbuster this year with Dune: Part Three. In the third entry in Timothée Chalamet‘s science fiction/fantasy epic series, Pattinson portrays the antagonist Scytale, a shapeshifting character at the center of a plot to dethrone Chalamet’s Paul Atreides from his seat as emperor of the known universe. Pattinson appears in The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three alongside costar Zendaya, whom he also notably costarred with in April’s The Drama.
On the red carpet at The Odyssey‘s premiere, Pattinson teased the tricks he uses to help himself get into character on set. “There’s always one little thing that you kind of do every movie, I always find some kind of little quirk. I’m trying to remember what it was on this,” he says. I remember doing something which a lot of people thought I was very strange doing, but I can’t remember [what].”
