NEED TO KNOW

  • Ty Pennington turned to his mother, a former child psychologist, for advice during emotional challenges on Battle on the Beach

  • The mother-daughter team mentored by Pennington faced struggles with communication and confidence throughout the competition, he shares with PEOPLE

  • Battle on the Beach season 5 premieres June 1 with new episodes airing Mondays

After dealing with an unexpected dynamic on his team in season 5 of Battle on the Beach, HGTV star and returning mentor Ty Pennington had to turn to someone very close to him to help navigate all the emotions: his mother, Yvonne.

On the home renovation competition series, three teams of two up-and-coming renovators have a budget of $100,000 and seven weeks to increase the rental value and appeal of rundown beachfront properties. Among the competitors this year are the mother-daughter duo Michelle Mueller and Sydney Lorence, who are mentored by Pennington, 61.

The pair, the Rock the Block host tells PEOPLE, had “breakdowns from day one.”

As seen in the first episode, the Nebraska duo struggled with getting on the same page about their design concept for the living room and entryway, with Lorence reduced to tears after she felt like her mom and Pennington were not supporting her ideas. And based on PEOPLE’s exclusive trailer for the full season, it looks like the tears don’t stop flowing as the family butts heads.

Beyond his own mentees, “there was a crisis every day” on set with all the teams, Pennington says, adding that he and the show’s newest mentors, Sarah Baeumler (Renovation Island) and Mika Kleinschmidt (100 Day Dream Home), “all had to scramble to figure out how we can not only be a mentor and be someone’s experience in design, but also be a mental therapist to help people through this.”

Since he “had so many ups and downs” with Lorence and Mueller, Pennington revealed in a social media clip for HGTV that he actually called on his mom for help. Explaining his thinking to PEOPLE, he shares, “Believe it or not, she was a child psychologist.”

What he gleaned from growing up with her was that “fear of failure is what can ruin anyone,” Pennington says, adding, “I think that’s why I’m passionate about being part of the show, because you’re helping a young designer come up and believe in themselves.”

“So I think it takes someone with experience to say, ‘Look, you’ve got a talent, believe in yourself!'” he continues, explaining he tried to support his team by building their confidence. “Sometimes we are scared of what we create, because that confidence can take them many, many places… These people are passionate about not only design, but making a name for themselves — and we can guide them the best we can, but we also have to support the good, the bad and sometimes, the ugly.”

That said, the call with his mom proved to be useful because Pennington teases that Lorence and Mueller eventually went from experiencing “crushing defeat and feeling completely like they’d lost everything” to “believing in themselves at the very end.”

New episodes of Battle on the Beach air Mondays on HGTV and are available to stream the next day on HBO Max.
